Enthronement of Bishop Yulian Pelesh on the pages of the Ukrainian magazine "Dilo"

Abstract

The article states that in march 1885, pope Leo XIII issued a boule «De univeso dominico grege» about formation of the separate Stanislaviv diocese of the Greek-Catholic Church. By a decision of February 20, 1885 Franz Joseph I named, and pope Leo XIII on march 27, 1885, confirmed and appointed the first Stanislaviv bishop dr Julian Pelesh.

In early march 1885 a delegation from the Ukrainians of Stanislaviv arrived in Lviv, consisting of a priest T. Shankovsky, a catechist I. Lytvynovich, a landowner Justin Maletsky, a professor Ivan Verhratsky, a lawyer Meliton Buchynsky, a merchant Theodor Stakhevych, and also Aleksandr Klyuchenko and Ivan Serbensky.

March 27, 1885, Fr. Dr. Y.Pelesh received in the temple of St. Yura in Lviv the a bishopric consecration from the hands of Galician Metropolitan S. Sembratovich as a saint and archbishops of Lviv, S. Moravsky (Latin rite) and I.Isakovich (Armenian rite) as coordinators. The ordination of the first bishop of Stanislaviv was held on November 1, 1885, at the Greek-Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of St. George in Lviv.

The article notes that the residents of Stanislaviv carefully organized a meeting of Bishop Y.Pelesh in his city. The order of the bishop's solemn entrance to the city, January 9, 1886, and his enthronement in the Cathedral Church of the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ was developed. Subsequently, Y.Pelesh was attended by representatives of Ukrainian, Latin and Armenian clergy, government officials, professors of schools and a delegation from local Ukrainian societies.

After the festive dinner in the episcopal palace there was a solemn reception on the occasion of the enthronement of Y.Pelesh. January 9, 1886, Ukrainian societies in Stanislaviv hosted a musical declamation evening in honor of Julian Pelesh. Naming about Dr. Y.Pelesh as the first Stanislaviv bishop successfully complete the long-standing competitions of the Galician clergy for the creation of the third in the Galician Church Provincial Diocese.
