This work highlights the problem of the attitude of Andriy Sheptytsky and Ivan Ogienko to the ecumenical movement in Ukrainian churches. The article attempts to show the different nature of the hierarchs' vision of this problem and to predict ways to solve it. In addition, the problem with the philosophical subtext is analyzed, namely: how for Andriy Sheptytsky not to sever ties with Rome and remain faithful to the Eastern rite, and for Ivan Ogienko (Metropolitan Hilarion) to follow the Eastern rite, but not lose the Ukrainian (national) face . It is on this basis that the positions of the two hierarchs and their attitude to the ecumenical movement in Ukrainian churches are analyzed.
