Abstract

For many people, the suffering caused by illness is an incomprehensible phenomenon, and often a proof against the existence of a good God. In many cases, the question of illness and pain it causes, causes open indignation against God himself, becomes the cause of His rejection, leads to the denial of His existence. Many people ask themselves, "If God really exists and He is good, then how can we explain sickness, pain, and suffering? Why does God allow the suffering of innocent people, war, bloodshed, natural disasters? Shouldn't a merciful God have mercy on his children?"

Man rightly asks about the meaning of his suffering and at the human level seeks answers to these questions. She often puts them to God, puts them to Christ. At the same time, a person cannot ignore the fact that the One to whom he asks his question suffers himself, but he wants to answer it from the cross, the heart of his own suffering. However, sometimes it takes time, even quite a long time, to become ready to accept this answer internally. Christ does not give a direct or abstract answer to man's question about the meaning of sickness, suffering, or mental disorder. Man hears Christ's saved answer insofar as he becomes a partaker of His sufferings. As a person takes up his cross, spiritually united with the cross of Christ, the saving meaning of suffering becomes more and more revealed to him.
