Abstract

The papal teaching, addressed to the Ukrainian people, was most fully heard during personal direct contact during the pilgrimage to Ukraine in 2001. The whole complex program of that event took into account the historical and cultural context in which Ukraine found itself after leaving the structures of the USSR and embarking on the path of building its own national and religious identity. The consciousness of this place in history did not leave John Paul II. This was expressed in his numerous allusions and examples contained in public and private speeches. The Pope's attitude is marked by a deep respect for the rich national tradition, a high appreciation of the authorities who formed the basis of identity and care for the preservation and development of the passion that present generations have, creating the foundations of national and state existence.

In this environment, the religious sphere in general in its pluralism and diversity can also develop, in accordance with the communities and minorities that inhabit this large country.
