Holy Martyr Josaphat Kuntsevich. The journey of the Relics from Vitebsk to Rome

The article is devoted to the study of the historical journey and preservation of the relics of the holy martyr Josaphat Kuntsevych (1580/84–1623), which became a symbol of the struggle and resilience of the Uniate Church in the lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The key stages of the relics' journey are analysed, beginning with their martyrdom in Vitebsk, their concealment and miraculous protection during the Polish-Muscovite wars (1627, 1633). Particular attention is paid to the events of 1705, when Tsar Peter I attempted to destroy the relics in Polotsk, which led to the murder of Basilian monks. The complex journey of the relics through Supraśl, Biała Podlaska (where they were walled up by the Russian authorities in 1873), their secret rescue in 1916, transport to Vienna and final arrival at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome (1963) are described in detail. The study emphasises the importance of this process for raising the authority of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church at the international level.
