Lviv Archdiocesan Councils played an important role in the development of particular law of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, as they were the only source of lawmaking in our Church since the Lviv Synod in 1891. In 1944, Ukrainian lands were occupied for the second time by the Red Army. Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. In November of the same year, Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky died. Since his death, the NKVD has begun systematic arrests of our clergy. One year later, on April 11, 1945, all the bishops of the UGCC, led by its new head, Metropolitan Joseph the Blind, were arrested. 1946 was the worst year in our history. It was this year that the so-called "Lviv Council" took place, at which the abolition of the Brest Union and the "unification" of Greek Catholics with the Russian Orthodox Church were proclaimed without the participation of Greek Catholic bishops.
