The first half of the twentieth century was marked by the ministry of an outstanding bishop and ascetic of the Ukrainian Church and people, the Servant of God, Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyy, OSVB, on the throne of the Galician Metropolis. Having taken the helm of the Church in 1900, Bishop Andrey devoted 44 long years of his life to its development and strengthening. The Metropolitan was a supporter of the collegial form of church governance, and therefore the first major undertaking he made as head of the Galician Church Province was to hold a diocesan council of the Lviv Archdiocese
