Abstract

The general public of Europe in the interwar period felt the effects of the First World War very acutely. Xenophobia and misanthropy grew, extremes in European society intensified, German militarism grew stronger, and revanchist sentiments spread. Far-right parties were increasingly popular in politics, and there was a threat of left-wing radical, communist ideas and influences from the Soviet Union penetrating the West.

In religious circles, there was growing concern about the spread of sectarianism among the public, the elimination of religious principles, and the gradual reduction of the Church's influence on society.
